One of the few certainties we have in this world is that at some point, we will fail. Even if this comes after we’ve been saved, when we experience failure, it is easy to get bogged down by the inevitable shame and guilt that follows – but fortunately, the Bible tells us how to deal with this.

In John 21, we see how Jesus deals with Peter’s failure and his shame and guilt. Reggie explains that in this scene, where the resurrected Jesus appears to Peter and some of the other disciples, he offers a fresh start and a new relationship despite Peter’s earlier rejection of Christ.

With this total reconciliation comes an important warning against self-reliance, as Jesus tenderly reminds Peter, we can’t make it on our own.
