By Grace Alone – Sola Gratia – is the third sermon by Conrad Mbewe on the Five Solas. The Five Solas answer the most important question in the whole of human history: How can sinners be reconciled to a holy God?
There is no distinction
All men and woman have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. We are all sinners. God can only receive us on the basis of his grace, a free gift which we receive through belief and faith in the saving work of Jesus Christ.
“You are not yet ready to become a Christian until you come to that point – where you are no longer thinking that perhaps you deserve something compared to your brother or sister because they are worse than you.”
God is just
“I remember thinking when I was growing up that God would put my good works on one side and my bad works on the other and if my good works outweigh my bad ones He will say ‘Come in, come in, well done, well done. And if my bad works outweigh my good works He will shake his head and say sorry – not good enough. Angel Gabriel – drag him out of here.’
No judge says – well – let the guy go because he has done some good things. The question is ‘did he steal the car or not?’
But that never happens in any law court. No judge says – well – let the guy go because he has done some good things. The question is “did he steal the car or not?” If he stole the car he broke the law – therefore he must be punished.”
Sola Gratia – by grace alone – is at the very heart of the Gospel
“Yes, God is loving and God is merciful – but he is also gracious – doing for us the opposite of what we deserve. That is the heart of the Gospel.”
