Can a Christian smoke weed? With its common use in communities and legalisation in some countries, is this currently acceptable act a Christian one?
Can A Christian Smoke Weed?
There’s no explicit scriptural backing against smoking weed but I firmly believe biblical wisdom strongly points us towards no as the answer.
“The truth is, I know many people who consistently smoked weed, when growing up and I cannot point to one who has ever reached their potential as a human being. Most of them ended up being extreme pale shadows of what they could have become. I know there are many exceptions here and there but that’s the point, they are exceptions.”

Can Christians Smoke Weed?
Well, the answer, if asked that way, is yes because some Christians do in fact smoke weed. The more important question I think is, should Christians smoke igbo, marijuana, cannabis or weed?
First of all, I should say I’m talking about the recreational use of weed not the medicinal use. Second, you shouldn’t do it as a Nigerian Christian because last time I checked it wasn’t legal. But assuming it were legal, should we?
No Scriptural Backing Against Weed.
Now this is one of the grey areas of Christian ethics because there’s no explicit scriptural backing against smoking weed. But I firmly believe biblical wisdom strongly points us towards no as the answer. Here are three reasons why it is neither wise or right.
There’s no explicit scriptural backing against smoking weed but I firmly believe biblical wisdom strongly points us towards no as the answer.
3 Reasons Why Biblical Wisdom Says, “No”
Smoking weed except with very few people always gets the smoker high. This experience is very similar to the drunken intoxication that the Bible forbids. Second, again not in all cases but in very many, the consistent recreational use of weed has been demonstrated to have a direct correlation with decline in many people’s mental health. As Christians God tells us that it’s our responsibility to take care of our health in a holistic way that is: Spiritually, physically and psychologically.
In many cases the consistent recreational use of weed has been shown to have a direct correlation with decline in many people’s mental health.
And then third, finally, unlike with the responsible use of alcohol which is associated with scripture, with bringing people together, weed is mostly associated with individual disconnection from the world and people around us. Now wanting this disengagement could be for a variety of reasons but essentially this goes against the biblical view that are living out of our humanity requires more connectivity not disconnection.
Weed Can Inhibit Your Potential To Succeed
The truth is, I know many people who consistently smoked weed, when growing up and I cannot point to one who has ever reached their potential as a human being. Most of them ended up being extreme pale shadows of what they could have become. I know there are many exceptions here and there but that’s the point, they are exceptions.
The Bible advocates for the path that leads to human flourishing. And smoking weed could hardly ever be found on any of those paths.
The Bible advocates for the path that leads to human flourishing. And smoking weed could hardly ever be found on any of those paths. So, if you are thinking smoking weed is compatible with your Christianity, just think again. Because it’s neither wise nor right.
