Editors’ note:

BibleProject is a non-profit, crowdfunded animation studio that produces 100% free Bible videos, podcasts, articles, classes, and educational Bible resources to help make the biblical story accessible to everyone everywhere. TGC Africa shares select BibleProject overview videos translated into Kiswahili with permission. These videos explore the Bible’s unified story by focusing on its overarching themes and each book’s literary design, with a commitment to understanding the Bible in its historical context and communicating its wisdom for the modern world. As biblical themes are traced from beginning to end they highlight the Bible’s unified message that leads us to Jesus.

This Kiswahili translation of the BibleProject’s overview of the Old Testament books of Ezra and Nehemiah introduces us to Ezra, a priest who was instrumental in the return of the Jewish exiles to ancient Israel. We also meet Ezra’s contemporaries, Zerubbabel and Nehemiah, and their efforts to rebuild Jerusalem and restore the religious practices of ancient Israel.

The Book of Ezra Is for You

Apart from Psalms and Proverbs, maybe Genesis and Exodus, many believers find the Old Testament to be difficult. Sure the stories are sometimes interesting and the poetry is moving, but how does it help Christians today? What is God saying to his church through these inspired Old Testament books? In many ways, the BibleProject is a ministry committed to answering those questions—among many others. And their overview videos have been watched millions of times over, probably because so many of us struggle when it comes to reading and understanding the Old Testament.

God’s people need a holistic transformation of their hearts if they’re ever going to love and obey their God.

As they say in this video, the book of Ezra “focuses on three key leaders who led the rebuilding efforts; you have Zerubbabel, then Ezra and then Nehemiah. And the book’s design focuses on the efforts of each leader. Zerubbabel leads a large group of people back to Jerusalem to rebuild the temple, then about 60 years later, Ezra arrives in Jerusalem to teach the Torah and rebuild the community. And then he’s followed by Nehemiah who leads the rebuilding of Jerusalem’s walls.”

This historical backdrop, and the shape of Ezra as a whole reveals that, “what God’s people need is a holistic transformation of their hearts if they’re ever going to love and obey their God.” That line alone reveals how much God has to teach us through the Old Testament.
