In this second short conversation recorded during the 2023 TGC Conference (you can listen to the first here), Nancy Guthrie and Ken Mbugua define biblical theology. They delve deeper as to why they think biblical theology is necessary in the Church, particularly in Africa. In short, then, this video offers a brief definition and explanation of biblical theology; and then explores some of its implications for believers.
The Bible Tells One, Single Story
There are many ways one could define biblical theology. Beyond that, numerous details can be unpacked. But in conversation with Ken, Nancy Guthrie does a great job of providing a brief, working definition. She says that biblical theology is, “A way of looking at the Bible—while it has many human authors—has one divine author and he’s telling us a story about what he’s doing in the world to have a people for himself, that is centred on the person of Jesus Christ.”
From Genesis to Revelation, the Bible tells one, single story.
As with most aspects of the Christian faith, a great many books have been written on biblical theology; lectures, seminars, and sermons too. However it needn’t be daunting. Nor is it beyond the untrained believer’s ability to understand. From Genesis to Revelation, the Bible tells one, single story. Behind that stands God, the divine author, and throughout it he’s pointing us to Jesus, his Son.
Biblical Theology Is a Guard Against Bible Distortion
In addition to being accessible, biblical theology is also immensely practical.
It is, as Ken says, a great tool in Africa to stave off false teaching and attacks from the church. Both of which come from within the Church. He continues, “Coming to the scriptures and seeing how the story comes together, so that when someone goes to the Old Testament and quotes for you a promise and pulls it out of its context, all of a sudden you go like, ‘that does not fit in to the story that the Lord is weaving from the very beginning to the very end'”
Far from theological hobby-horsing, the study of doctrine serves the faithfulness of God’s people. It will serve you.
