African Traditional Thinking
The question of whether other people knowing that you are pregnant is a cause for the loss of pregnancy, is really something that is steeped in African traditional cultural thinking. Because the whole idea there is that anything bad that happens to you has been caused by individuals who don’t like you and consequently, they have dabbled into the underworld and brought some bad luck upon you. Which really is not the biblical understanding of life.
The Biblical Understanding
Because, the way the Bible educates us, is the fact that, yes, God made a perfect world. But in Genesis 3 there was a Fall and as a consequence of that Fall there is suffering that has come to all of us. Nobody is exempt from it. Even Christians will undergo suffering. Now, some of it will be as a result of persecution from other fallen human beings, there’s no doubt about that. But a lot of it is simply because of God’s curse upon the world which includes human beings.
Thorns and Thistles
So, for instance, in Genesis 3, God himself says that there will be thorns and thistles that will come into our human life. And so, we will have death inevitably. And that death might be in old age, it might be in middle life, it might be to a child, it may even be in the womb. That death is again God’s general curse upon human beings.
How a Christian Ought to Think
And therefore, what we need to do is not so much thinking that some bad people have brought charms into my life, it’s to recognize that life is from God. He gives it, he also takes it away and our response is, as Job said when he lost his children, “Blessed be the Lord.” We still worship him who is sovereign. He knows what he has done, we bow to his sovereignty and we seek to, yes, do what we can to prevent that happening again, if it’s a medical or health condition. Otherwise, allow him to comfort you and to lead you into your next phase of life.
