The subject of church discipline is often uncomfortable. But it is an essential part of the church’s life. Just as families, schools, and workplaces require order and accountability, the church too must face the reality and need for discipline. Unfortunately, many congregations either avoid the issue altogether or handle it poorly—sometimes inconsistently, sometimes unfairly. In this video from Conrad Mbewe, the sixth and final in his series on God’s design for the church, he demonstrates why biblical discipline is so crucial for the wellbeing and witness of God’s people.
The church can’t afford to compromise on holiness.
But Mbewe doesn’t only draw out the Bible’s insistence on the need for church discipline, he also shows what form it should take. Importantly, here, he doesn’t thumb-suck a process; instead Mbewe develops a few biblical passages that outline how to approach discipline. All the while, he keeps pointing out how discipline both protects the church’s integrity and promotes spiritual growth.
This video along with the rest of the series reminds us of a very important point: the church isn’t ours; it is Christ’s. That reframes everything, from how we choose our leaders to how spiritual formation takes place. Ultimately, church discipline is about guarding God’s holiness and the church’s witness. If the church won’t deal with sin, then—as Mbewe warns—God himself might step in. That is a sobering thought, but not a sensational one. In Mbewe’s own words, “Holiness is not something that the church can afford to compromise in. The reason is quite simple because God himself is holy. If we do not clarify this matter through the discipline of the church, the Lord himself will come against the Church. Pity the church that is now directly under the discipline of God.”
