Editors’ note:

BibleProject is a non-profit, crowdfunded animation studio that produces 100% free Bible videos, podcasts, articles, classes, and educational Bible resources to help make the biblical story accessible to everyone everywhere. TGC Africa shares select BibleProject overview videos translated into Kiswahili with permission. These videos explore the Bible’s unified story by focusing on its overarching themes and each book’s literary design, with a commitment to understanding the Bible in its historical context and communicating its wisdom for the modern world. As biblical themes are traced from beginning to end they highlight the Bible’s unified message that leads us to Jesus.

This Kiswahili translation of the BibleProject’s overview of the book of Esther introduces us to Esther and tells the story of how she became the Queen of Persia. The core of this story is that God providentially saved the Jews through Esther’s faith and bravery.

Did you know that Esther is the one book in the Bible that does not mention God? Well, now you know. In the book of Esther, God is not mentioned and yet we see him acting. We learn from Esther how to live in unpredictable times on this side of heaven.

In spite of what it may look or even feel like, God is always at work and powerfully at that. And that is the formidable message of the book of Esther.

Silent But Sovereign

God uses the faithfulness of even morally compromised people to accomplish his purposes.

Like the writer in Hebrews 11:6 says, “… for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him.” We see that all Esther and Mordecai had was their faith in God.

From this book, we are reminded that God’s work in and around us is not always as obvious as we want it to be. God’s essence and nature are very different from ours and how he will move and work will most times not align with our logic.

“And so, the Book of Esther comes back to that question with which we began, why God is not mentioned. The message of this book seems to be that when God seems absent, when his people are in exile, when they’re unfaithful to the Torah, does this mean that God is done with Israel? Has God abandoned his promises? And the Book of Esther says, no. It invites us to see that God can and does work in the real mess and moral ambiguity of human history.

And he uses the faithfulness of even morally compromised people to accomplish his purposes. And so, the Book of Esther asks us to be willing to trust God’s providence even when we can’t see it working. And to hope that no matter how bad things get, God is committed to redeeming his world. And that’s what the Book of Esther is all about.”
