That God so loved the world and he gave his only Son is remarkable, but unsurprising. Because love is fundamental to God’s character and our faith.
Jesus’ death on the cross is a monumental, historical event. At the cross, Jesus bares the sins of the world in order for mankind to be reconciled to God. When confronted with the death of Jesus, one can either bow down in faith or mock him and pass by.
As Jesus hung on the cross, he cried: “Father, forgive them.” As it was then, such grace towards our perpetrators is radically countercultural, and divine.
