“What counsel can I give to those who are single Christians? Well strictly speaking it should never be my word. Ultimately what we want to know is what does Scripture say? And I will take you to 1 Corinthians and chapter 7. Among many other passages of scripture that specifically address single people and here the Apostle Paul puts it this way. In 1 Corinthians 7:8, “To the unmarried and the widows I say that it is good for them to remain single, as I am. But if they cannot exercise self-control, they should marry. For it is better to marry than to burn with passion.” Clearly what we have here are the words of wisdom from God himself. And you will notice that there are essentially two words of counsel that is given to us here.

First of all it is this, that if you are not married you are in fact in an advantaged position. And that’s why Paul says there very clearly that it is good for them to remain single. Now you might ask the question “Why should that be the case?” Well, this is the way Paul puts it in 1 Corinthians 7, but this time beginning with verse 32. This is what he says, “I want you to be free from anxieties. The unmarried man is anxious about the things of the Lord, how to please the Lord. But the married man is anxious about worldly things, how to please his wife, and his interests are divided.” In the same way he goes on to say “and the unmarried or betrothed woman is anxious about the things of the Lord, how to be holy in body and spirit. But the married woman is anxious about worldly things, how to please her husband. I say this for your (own) benefit,” the Apostle Paul says, “not to lay any restraint upon you, but to promote good order and to secure your undivided devotion to the Lord.”

So clearly, the reason why the scriptures here counsel young people, single people, to take advantage of their singleness, is so that they can concentrate on the things of God. Serving the Lord, seeking to be a means by which individuals around you can come to know Christ as Lord and Saviour as you go about with other believers sharing the gospel. Seeking to be a blessing to others because you have no anxieties about family life. It is all about the Lord. So that’s the first counsel. It is this – give yourself unreservedly to Christian service.

But then there is a second word that he gives which is equally important and he puts it this way, “But if they cannot exercise self-control”, that is 1 Corinthians 7 and this time, verse 9 “they should marry. For it is better to marry than to burn with passion.” In other words the counsel that is being given here is pretty simple. If you are finding yourself struggling with lust, simple, quickly marry! So that you may now go into the phase where you have other responsibilities in life but at least you are not sinning against the Lord by finding yourself in sexual immorality. Marry, get married and raise a family. Yes, there will be divided devotion, but hey, it’s better than sinning against the Lord.

Well, there you are. This is the counsel that the word of God gives to single Christians. Make sure you take heed of it. Well, in case you have any other questions, feel free to get in touch and you will be told exactly what the Scripture says.

Welcome to The Pastor’s Studio. In today’s episode Pastor Conrad Mbewe gives biblical counsel about being single to Christians.

There are essentially two words of counsel that are given to us here:

1 Corinthians 7:8, “To the unmarried and the widows I say that it is good for them to remain single, as I am. But if they cannot exercise self-control, they should marry. For it is better to marry than to burn with passion.”

Being Single Is Good

First of all it is this, that if you are not married you are in fact in an advantaged position. And that’s why Paul says there very clearly that it is good for Christians to remain single.

The reason why the scriptures here counsel young people, single people, to take advantage of their singleness, is so that they can concentrate on the things of God. Serving the Lord, seeking to be a means by which individuals around you can come to know Christ as Lord and Saviour as you go about with other believers sharing the gospel. Seeking to be a blessing to others because you have no anxieties about family life. It is all about the Lord. So that’s the first counsel around being single. It is this – give yourself unreservedly to Christian service.

But Beware of Sexual Sin

But then there is a second word that he gives  regarding being single which is equally important.  He puts it this way: “But if they cannot exercise self-control”, that is 1 Corinthians 7:9 “they should marry. For it is better to marry than to burn with passion.”

In other words the counsel that is being given here is pretty simple. If you are finding yourself struggling with lust, simple, quickly marry! So that you may now go into the phase where you have other responsibilities in life but at least you are not sinning against the Lord by finding yourself in sexual immorality.
